Are you a publishing house?

March 2025

People often ask me if Lillian Webb Illustration + Design is a publishing house.

A publishing house is any company that buys and sells IP (intellectual property).

A self-publisher sells their own IP independent of a larger company.

As a book designer, I have no rights to an author's IP but I help it look as good as possible whether it is image or text.

I often take on tasks aside from design, such as organising printing and shipping.

This kind of work is usually reserved for the production manager in a publishing house.

As an independent book designer, I switch between roles of design, production management and so on.

This is not necessarily the job of a book designer but a part of the process I am able to help with.

I hope this answers the question of what a publishing house is.
